HRL-1 Ribbon Speaker Constructional Details

An extremely robust construction is employed in the HRL-1. A pair of substantial aluminium castings are used for the magnet housing and the front flange, the latter having a gold hammered finish. The replaceable insert is sandwiched between the two castings and serves a secondary function as a gasket, effectively sealing the ribbon against pressure variations in the main enclosure.
The small matching transformer (necessary to raise the low impedance of the ribbon element to a usable value such as 8 ohms) is mounted on a small glassfibre PCB on the rear of the unit's mounting flange; this PCB also carries the ¼ inch input receptacles. The "hot" end of the ribbon connects to the PCB while the "cold" end connects back to the transformer via the castings and the PCB's mounting studs.
